Day Trips from Playa Zipolite
Whale Watch via Puerto Angel
Of all of the whale watching adventures we’ve been on, we have never seen so much activity as we did on our adventure from Puerto Angel.
You may have driven through it on the way to Zipolite, but just 10 minutes away from Zipolite (más o menos), is the 150 meter long Playa Panteon. The drive in is a bit harrowing, with narrow streets and few places to park, but once you arrive you’ll love the family-friendly, local vibe, casual beach eats and a steady stream of small boats heading out to sea.
There are a few operators taking tourists out to find the whales (best season is December through February), explore the coastline, and share points of interest that the guides are fiercely proud of.
Along the way, you’ll likely get the chance to hop in for a swim in a calm bay and when you’re finished, enjoy a whole fried fish or marinated squid for lunch.
Watch the sunset from Punta Cometa
Geographically, Punta Cometa is the Southernmost tip of Mexico. What makes this spot so special is that you can watch the sun rise and set on the ocean, in the same day, every day of the year. Locals and visitors alike hike out to the point to enjoy the view and soak up this spiritual experience.
Getting here is easy, but the roads from Mazunte can be busy, so give yourself enough time to get to the entrance, where you will be asked to make a small donation to the park. The hike is a fairly easy, taking approximately 20 - 25 minutes each way (it’s an out and back walk). The dirt path comes close to a few steep cliffs so wear proper shoes.
There are a few different paths you can follow and spots to watch the sunset, with the majority of visitors following the trails to the left, leading you the furtherest way out over the ocean. At the end there are few benches facing West and plenty of spots to perch and enjoy the big, daily event.
Remember, the walk back could be dark so bring a flashlight.
Hang with the crocs, bird-watch, and release a turtle in Ventanilla
Drive a bit further past Mazunte and you’ll find yourself at the small indigenous community called La Ventanilla, a destination becoming increasingly popular for its ecotourism. There’s one main road leading from the highway to the beach and it’s there you’ll find Ventanilla Community Ecotourism (this site is Spanish so consider booking via Tripadvisor or a local operator before going).
Packages include a visit to the lagoon where you’ll board a small boat and ‘close enough’ to the big cocodrilos, before visiting the island and where you can see the babies hatching, donkeys, howler monkeys, and of course enjoy lunch, fresh coconut water or Mezcal.
Many say first thing in the morning is best time to do this part of the tour as the sun is not quite as hot and birds are partying.
At sunset is the other big show, the well-loved turtle release experience. It’s a cute way to support the conservation efforts being done (along with the community), learn about turtle reproduction, and release a baby sea turtle into the ocean (which even for the most hardened city-gay is a beautiful experience).
After many years of anticipation the new La Autopista Barranca Larga-Ventanilla toll highway opened in January 2024, linking Oaxaca City to the coastal road near Puerto Escondido. What was once an eight hour journey has now been reduced to approximately three (while the map may show it longer, we have friends with heavy feet).
If you make the journey, get ready for a colorful one - packed with vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and welcoming vibes. Here are a few must-dos:
Explore the Foodie Paradise: Indulge in Oaxacan delicacies like tlayudas, mole, and chapulines (yes, those are crunchy grasshoppers!) at local markets and trendy eateries.
Dive into the Nightlife: Hit up gay-friendly bars and clubs in the city center for a night of dancing, mezcal sipping, and making new amigos.
Have an Art Exploration: Dive into Oaxaca's rich artistic scene by visiting galleries, street art murals, and craft markets showcasing local talent.
Historical Wonders: Explore ancient ruins like Monte Alban and Mitla, connecting with the region's fascinating pre-Hispanic past.
